Symmetric Group #901 Upholstered Lounge Chair designed by Paul McCobb for Widdicomb
The title pretty much says it all. A lovely piece from one of the less known 60's design groups by Paul McCobb.
The Symmetric Group was in production from 1962 to 1965. This group was available in department stores and was also sold through the Paul McCobb Showrooms.
The final authoritative identification of this chair (It is not signed) was made when I recently received a copy of an original Symmetric Group catalog from an archive recently discovered in the possession of Paul McCobb's daughter Melissa.
The design of this chair, one of the last upholstered pieces designed by Paul McCobb, has strong resonance with the some of the earliest upholstered furniture designs by Paul McCobb for the Planner Group in 1950.
Seen in the background of this photo are other Paul McCobb designs including a Linear Group Walnut and Aluminum #496/497 Room Divider (displaying various bits of Contempri China also designed by Paul McCobb) and the iconic Planner Group #1531 Windsor chair.

I worked at an agency across the river from JW during their eventual demise and purchase by three individual investors. Before then, I developed NEOCON communications for them on behalf of designer Mario Buotta's collection. Buotta is referred to by many as the "Prince of Chintz". I also had an opportunity to photograph another one of their lines with NC shooter Paul Dodge. Because of these experiences, I have a deep appreciation for Widdicomb's intense craftsmanship, and can only image what quality this chair and group must be.
Re: Paul McCobb
Great chair(!!),
I have a Directional sofa by McCobb c. 1958 that mirrors all the elements of your chair. Could you send me the info on the catalog you have??
Thx.
