Bauer Country Gardens Covered Casserole

Mary Wright, wife of Russel, designed this clever covered casserole with a hinged lid in the late 1940s. It was produced by Bauer Pottery Company for a short run of trade show samples, but never put into full production. This substantial casserole measures 12-inches wide by 7-inches high and has a pin on the lid and a hole in the base that allows the lid to swing open without being removed. With low production and a lid that is easily broken, not too many of these casseroles have survived. I was lucky to find this example at this weekend's Modernism Show in Winnetka, Illinois!

WOW!

You must have been grinning all the way home.

Wow

I've never seen this form before. The scale is surprising. If not given dimensions, I'd have guessed it was a leftover.
Congrats.

Mary Wright hinged casserole

Looks great Scott! I know it must have been worth the wait. Have only seen this piece in person once before, have never had one. It's amazing to see how large it is in person.

What an amazing piece by Mary Wright

Hi Pam, good to see you! I can only recall seeing one other of these as well. What a fabulous item. BTW, This is NOT the only lidded 'casserole' dish that Mary Wright designed. Patent records indicate she designed a lidded ceramic dish that can be used for cooking. The skillet/server was also enormous at 12" x 16". The patent records show it with a swinging lid. Mary Wright's covered cooking dish with swinging lid.

I wonder if the lid was ever produced for the skillet/server?

re What an amazing piece by Mary Wright

Hi Mike,
Good to hear from you, too. Did not know that the skillet also had a hinged design. I wonder if anyone has a copy of the drawing for that? Would love to see the sketch.
I will try to post some photos and things on here soon.Pam

The link for the patent...see previous post

The link for the patent is in the previous post...That's the only sketch I recall seeing. While the lid swings up, I don't think it was hinged. The original patent may be different from the skillet/server that we have found since the lid was not mechanically attached but was purportedly able to swing up and rest on the handle of the skillet.

Casserole Patent

Mike, do you know if there was a patent for the casserole with the hinged lid? It's a clever design, but seems to be very fragile for everyday use. It's one of those "sounds better than it really is in practice" kind of ideas.

Patents

I have some files to look through, but a quick search didn't reveal anything other than the 'casserole' which is similar to the skillet/server. Mary Wright also patented the sugar with spoon lid, her plate, and ice box dish.

Skillet Hinged Lid

I wonder if the hinged lid was ever made for the skillet? That would be an amazing find! I'm going to keep my eyes open for one!! ;-)

Great find!

Congrats, Scott. That's a great find! (I knew I should have gone to the Winnetka Modernism show this year!)
