Gordon Martz, In His Own Words

I'm trying out a little something new over at Ars Longa that might be of interest to you all. I had the great opportunity a while back to speak with Gordon Martz, proprietor of Marshall Studios. He shared lots of interesting tidbits about the development of Marshall Studios and his personal style, his education at Alfred University, the trials and tribulations that went along with developing and distributing a handmade product line, and much more. For example, did you know he never liked the award-winning teardrop-shaped lamp that represents his work in so many museum collections?

You can read the whole interview here: Gordon Martz, In His Own Words.

great interview concept

The article was great and the concept of presenting the designer 'in his/her own words' is brilliant. I'd love to see more interviews exactly like this one.

Gordon Martz interview

Scott, thank you so much for sharing the interview with Gordon Martz. Excellent! It is indeed interesting to learn that he didn't like the "teardrop shaped lamp". I still think it's a great looking lamp but most Martz lamps are easy to like in my opinion. Did you ask him if he had a favorite Martz lamp shape by chance?

No, but I still could

I didn't ask his favorite lamp design. He did mention really liking the "pitchers, tumblers and sugar and creamers and salt and pepper that was accepted in the Good Design show at MOMA" quite a bit, though. I could probably still email him and ask ...

High appreciation

So much went into providing this for the community at large–I can never get enough of this interview format. Collecting is no doubt a rush, but getting to know about the artist in this fashion takes it to another level. Thanks so much Scott. I am looking forward to more as you suggest will follow on your Ars Longa Journal.
