Re: Wall of China

I spent 10 minutes looking at all these very cool plates. What a fun way to display many types of plates. :) I like the one with the fish pattern. Would you mind telling us more about it? Thanks!

Re: Wall of China

Actually, would you mind identifying all of them? There are some I'm not familiar with, and some that are too small for me to see well enough with my middle-aged eyeballs. Many thanks!

Re: Wall of China

Nice! Perhaps you are too modest to call it "The Great Wall," but I spent several enjoyable minutes testing my knowledge of MCM dinneware by identifying plates.  Far left, second from bottom: is that Golden Burst?

Re: Wall of China

I agree.  I sat in front of my computer for a least 10 minutes looking at this lovely display.  It is the GREAT wall of china.

Re: Wall of China

What a fabulous collection and such a great idea!!! My husband will probably kill me but now I know what to do with that one bare wall in the dining room.

Re: Wall of China

Wow, now I have a special purpose in life: to come as close as possible to recreating this. I'd never leave home. I'd just sit and admire my wall.

Re: Wall of China

Oh my gosh I love a good pun, especially when combined with serious design greatness!  This is one of my favorite posts ever on this forum.  THANK YOU!  My family will see this today.

Re: Wall of China

This should be a quiz!

mpratt's picture

Wall of China Quiz

Ok, here's the quiz. Name whatever you know about the plate in these categories: manufacturer, shape name, pattern name, shape designer name, pattern designer name (if different). For each correct detail in the above categories, you'll be awarded one point. We'll assemble the answer key near the end of the month and declare a winner. I confess, I don't know all the details about these plates and a couple I may know nothing, but whatever can be verified will be awarded a point per detail. If you click on the smaller picture it will take you to a larger picture so you can see the details. First person to name a plate's details correctly gets the points. You don't need to know all the details about a plate to be awarded points. If you don't think someone's answer is correct, make your own guess.
Good luck!

Re: Wall of China Quiz

I'm glad you gave us 30 days!! :)) Thanks for putting this together.

2. Made by Westbend. There is a very popular bean pot with a warmer that matches it.

32. Metlox Poppytrail Free Form Pattern

Re: Wall of China Quiz

Rethink #2. The background is a drab green.

Re: Wall of China Quiz

After a fair amount of squinting at the screen (#8 is small!), here's my opening salvo of guesswork:

5. Universal: Raymor (Ben Seibel), Golden Burst design

6.  Royal: Futura
shape (Arthur Kendricks), Blue Heaven design

7.  Universal: Raymor
(Ben Seibel), Inca Sunurst design

8.  Taylor Smith
Taylor:  Cathay design

11 is also hard to see , but I’ll hazard it's Mar-Crest: Prestige shape
(maybe Arthur Kendricks?), Terrace design

[alternatively, it’s Royal: Futura shape (Arthur Kendricks),
Pueblo design (except that’s what I think #35 is)]

19. Stetson: Joan shape (maybe Alfred Dube?) the “cosmic orbs” design

21. Metlox: Poppytrail shape, Tropicana (Fish) design

23: Mar-Crest: Prestige shape (maybe Kendricks?), Patio design

25: Red Wing: Futura shape (Charles Murphy), Smart set
design

34. Royal: Futura shape (Arthur Kendricks), Santa Fe design

35. Royal: Futura shape (Arthur Kendricks), Pueblo design

36. Franciscan: Eclipse shape (George James), Starburst design
(Mary Brown)

Click on the second image to make it larger!

Re: Wall of China Quiz

#11 is hard to see. You'll have to base your answers on the shape to get points.

Re: Wall of China Quiz

Actually, if you click on the small photo it becomes larger and then in a Firefox browser there is a magnifing glass that appears with a plus sign. Click again, and it gets super large and you can see everything in detail.

Re: Wall of China Quiz

This is tough!
3 is Franciscan, Cypress, Flair shape designed by Mary Jane Winans;
24 is Edwin Knowles Mobile, Criterion shape by Broomhall?
39 is Edwin Knowles Equation
41 is (I think) Homer Laughlin's Epicure in Dawn Pink, shape by Don Schreckengost
43 is Shenango's Well of the Sea - don't know shape name or shape/pattern designers

mpratt's picture

Re: Wall of China Quiz

#41 isn't that glossy

subversivegrrl's picture

Re: Wall of China Quiz

Rats.  Oh, well, I do have one additional piece of info, which is that the shape name on the "Well of the Sea" plate is Continental.

Those crazy stylized birds just above it look like they might have come from the same hand.  Is there a connection?  Hmmm...

Re: Wall of China Quiz

OK, I've got some more:

#15 & #27 are both Glidden - I'm going to guess the shape designer for both was Glidden Parker (although there's no guarantee, I suppose), but I don't know the name of either design at the moment.  (Honestly, I was looking at Louisville Stoneware at first, because of the pineapple - they're very similar in some ways!)

#10 - Royal China for Sears' Harmony House, pattern is Starburst.

#18 & #35 I'm almost positive are Royal China, but that's as far as I got.

#23 - Royal China, Terrace

#28 - Royal China, Windblown (red)

#44 - Royal China for Harmony House - pattern is Caribbean, and according to Mike's earlier post, the designer was probably Gene Patterson

Re: Wall of China

What is #22- I think I need a whole set of that!!  I'll wait, I'll wait.  Just love it.

atomicscott's picture

Re: Wall of China

I know what #22 is (I'll let Mike tell you), but the pattern only exists on plates and serving platters, so it would be difficult, if not impossible to create an entire set.

Re: Wall of China

you probably know most of them!  I know about 4 and all were already named.
