Russel Wright American Modern Butter Dish Coral

Russel Wright American Modern Butter Dish Coral

This was definitely my "find of the day" at the most recent Alameda Point Antiques Faire (Sunday, July 3). As a collector for nearly 25 years, I have never seen this butter dish anywhere priced for less than $200 - and ofter for considerably more.  This mint butter dish was being sold as two separate pieces - the top and base were priced at $22.50 each.  I bought them both for $40.  It still astounds me that so many seemingly hard to find RW items are turning up at this high profile, extremely heavily trafficked market.

As for the design of the AM butter dish, I am not sure I really love it. It reminds me a great deal of a Trimline telephone or alternatively, a casket.

Great score!

Hadn't thought of the trimline phone. Now we know where they got the inspiration for that. ;-)

One of my least favorite AM colors but IMO the design is superb.  Love to find it in black chutney.  Regardless great find!

Re: Russel Wright American Modern Butter Dish Coral

My mother received a set in coral as a wedding gift.  Her sister also received a set in chartreuse/curry Their mother's set was granite grey.  Clearly by the early 1950s, AM had inspired the masses.  It was all downhill from there...my mother's next set of everyday dinnerware was Colonial Homestead by Royal China (lol).

It's a great shape for sure. It would be wonderful if we could have members document here on modish as much of Russel Wright's product as possible.

I think it has sexy lines, but would like it better in chartreuse. At first glance I thought it was a hot dog on a bun!
