Royal Haeger 1947 Design Award by S. Young

Royal Haeger 1947 Design Award by S. Young
This is the second piece of RH I have found with the 1947 design award mark. The other piece is an amazing life-size abstract head (unfortunately "lost" somewhere in storage). There seems to be little information about this award and the winners. Was it a competition? Were any of the designers well-known? Any additional information that anyone can share would be much appreciated.
This piece is quite large measuring 15" x 13" x 4". The mold number is R614. It has 3 or 4 small chips, but the price was right and I couldn't pass it up.

Nifty piece. Dare I say Frank Lloyd Wright Guggenheim-esque.
Re: Royal Haeger 1947 Design Award by S. Young
A neat find and share for sure, but I must say the piece looks a bit on the sloppy side. Yes?!
Re: Royal Haeger 1947 Design Award by S. Young
I know exactly what you're saying. The glaze and the surfaces are both uneven. I was surprised when I picked it up and saw the mark. It certainly didn't have the refined and finished look you'd expect from RH. I suppose it could be hand thrown.
Re: Royal Haeger 1947 Design Award by S. Young
This is definitely a hand built (slab built) piece.

Funny you would post a pic of that piece. I just saw that exact piece in my travels through Wisconsin last weekend!
Re: Royal Haeger 1947 Design Award by S. Young
Was.the condition good and the price reasonable?
Re: Royal Haeger 1947 Design Award by S. Young
It was $45. No damage.

I remember seeing this in Wisconsin as well. It was in the booth where I snagged the hyalyn vase. It was on the right hand side as I walked into the booth, I think on the top shelf. I remember looking at the price and thinking, hmmm. Then I saw the hyalyn vase and never gave the Haeger piece a second thought.

I've always wondered what the story was behind these Haeger Award pieces.

User Duke would know.
