Mid Century Gorham Modern Martini Pitcher

Mid Century Gorham Modern Martini Pitcher

A recent thrift store find.  Love that handle, might be bakelite, but not sure.  From Gorham's Modern line of silverplated pieces.  I believe this one is the martini pitcher.  Except for the handle, the shape reminds me of Arne Jacobsen's cylinda line he designed for Stelton.  11 inches tall.

Great handle. And do you have a handle on the date & designer?

Re: Mid Century Gorham Modern Martini Pitcher

Sorry, Mike, no handle on the designer. But I did find online that this line was made in the 1950s. I never thought of Gorham as a "modern" design company before. Would love to be able to add more pieces to this "collection of one."

Re: Mid Century Gorham Modern Martini Pitcher

Gorham's Modern line was designed by staff designer Donald Colflesh.  Colflesh studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art and Pratt Institute and then  worked at Gorham from 1956 to 1962.  The Modern beverage server was introduced in 1959 and produced for more than a decade.

This information is taken from Modernism in American Silver by Jewel Stern--an excellent exhibition catologue filled with great information and beautiful photography--I highly recommend it.

Re: Mid Century Gorham Modern Martini Pitcher

I had a chance to see the opening at the Renwick. The exhibition catalogue is indeed really outstanding and it was edited, in part, by Dr. Charles Venable. I should have recognized this piece.

There was a stir-up spoon that accompanied this pitcher.
