Iroquois Interplay

Iroquois Interplay Covered Divided Vegetable, Fleur-de-lis Pattern

Just when it looked like I was going to come up empty handed at the flea market today, I found not one, but two of these divided vegetable servers.
Moderators note: Please add a second image with the image icon in the toolbar of the text box. The second image on the Gallery Image post page is for backstamps only. The reason for this is that these images are pulled directly into the Marks Directory. We're working on a way to make this easier, but don't have the solution quite yet. Thanks!

Re: Iroquois Interplay
Sorry for the gaffe. I went to make the change, but it was already done. Thank you.
Re: Iroquois Interplay
Not a gaffe. And many more do this as well so I thought it helpful to post this note as a reminder and explanation to others.
We're rethinking some of the site structure to make things easier and this is one of those areas that needs restructuring. Unfortunately, adding the ability to post more than one photo in the galler images has implications for other established database queries.
Btw, forgot to say, congrats on the Interplay! It's a great find.
Re: Iroquois Interplay
Hi Michael,
I wonder if you would be kind enough to expound on or reiterate your interpretation as to the design attribution for this mysterious line of dinnerware. As you and others undoubtedly already know, in the Richard Racheter book Tableware Designs of Ben Seibel, no definitive conclusions are drawn. I think subsequent to the publication of that book, a very brief article from the NY Times (Sept. 6, 1952) surfaced about the introduction of the Interplay line and referenced the fact that the "plain" pieces were designed by Russel Wright. Do you interpret that to mean that RW designed only the pieces that did not incorporate decal decoration or that RW designed all the pieces (but not the decals)? It would seem the mystery of the design of these shapes is still yet to be solved, but it certainly continues to intrigue.
Re: Iroquois Interplay
Russel Wright was clearly mentioned as the designer of the Interplay line. One or two trade journals mentioned RW In relation to the line and adding a bowl to the line. I personally take the mention in 1950s NYT as fact. Beyond that--did RW or one of his associates assist with the patterns and shapes--I don't think anyone knows the specifics. For that matter, sorting out who did what in any design firm after so many years has passed is really difficult without more data.
I might add that the RW archives in Syracuse are extensive. It is still possible that the answer exists somewhere there. I'm guessing there is enough material there to answer many nagging questions. You'd probably need about a whole month of full days to carefully sift through everything there. Great source for potential masters and phd theses.
Re: Iroquois Interplay
Me likely lots.
