Hagen-Renaker Potteries

Hagen-Renaker Prancing Horses Wall Plaque
I remember back in the mid 1990s, when Jack Chipman's Collector's Encyclopedia of California Pottery was released, drooling over pictures of things I had no idea existed in the real world - this horse placque being one of them. As I believe it was produced for only a year or two (circa 1959/60), the reality of finding one seemed remote.
Well, last weekend at the Alameda Point Antiques Faire (San Francisco), I had the good luck of stumbling upon this. It wasn't a giveaway price, but it wasn't outrageously expensive either. It's monumental (approx. 22" x 15") and in mint condition. It bears no mark.

Re: Hagen-Renaker Potteries
Wow, that is gorgeous. Does it look as much like a slab of stone in person as it does in this photo?
Re: Hagen-Renaker Potteries
Yes, it really does look like stone. In addition to horses, there were some other motifs - including bison and fish (which look awesome) as well as cats and butterflies (maybe not so much).
I like the fact that this (the bison and fish) are evocative of prehistoric cave paintings but with a decidedly mid-century reinterpretation!
Some of the others are depicted on this web page:

Nice. I like the buck, but the fawn is rendered differently and doesn't do it for me. Some of the fish are pretty cool, too.

Love it!
Re: Hagen-Renaker Potteries
very nice! I also like the underwater life (fish, crab) on the website link.
