Francisco Rebajes brooch

Francisco Rebajes
Francisco Rebajes
Francisco Rebajes copper fish brooch

I know the site is dedicated to ceramics but there's another modern master that deserves his due. It's Dominican immigrant and New York jeweler Francisco Rebajes.

I've not read an extensive bio on his work but understand he was most active in the 1940s.

This brooch measures 2 3/4" long by 2 1/4" tall. Rebajes name is always stamped on verso.

I would have walked right by these, but not because I don't like them. Chalk another designer name up to an ever-growing list of items to look out for. A growing knowledge of good design is another great value of this community.

Thanks Steve.

Rebajes work is almost always in copper and always marked. You'll see it come in all sorts of forms of jewelry and even decorative bowls. Always collectible.

His chosen medium was copper like Russel Wright chose aluminum. A soft metal to sculpt fun things with.

Re: Francisco Rebajes brooch

- look at those little eyes - how could you not fall in love?    I picked up a pair of Judith Daner birds that dozens and dozens must have walked by that day - I didn't get to that tag sale until after 1 PM - and they opened at 8.   I almost dropped my jaw to the ground and then casually asked "how much for the birds?"      Beauty really is in the eyes of the beholder.
