A & C Majolica Tile

J. & J.G. Low Majolica Tile

Yesterday at an 40 table indoor yardsale I found one table with a variety of interesting items.  The discussion regarding the origins of some of the items was more interesting than usual when the gentleman manning the table indicated he had worked as a designer for Frank Gehry in the 70's.  First up is an A&C Celtic Knot tile made by the J. & J.G. Low Co. (1877-1902) of Chelsea, MA.  The deeply pressed image under clear majolica glaze has an iridescent blue-purple-pink glaze underneath.  Once again it is difficult for me to adequately describe the quality of workmanship of an item made over 100 years ago.  I am not sure if Low made primarily majolica tiles but they certainly make for an interesting contrast to the matte finish on most Grueby tiles manufactured in Boston.

Very Nice! I'm jealous. Can't wait to see the rest of your finds.

Very nice.

I bumped into Kay Hackett, designer of Stangl Lyric, at a flea market years ago. That was a treat. I still remember the conversation rather vividly.

Re: A & C Majolica Tile

Very nice! I'm in an ongoing renovation of a small 1930 house in Atlanta.

I have come to appreciate tile as I move forward with the renovation of the one Mantel in the house.

These tiles would have made any room seem so much grander. Great craftsmanship!   Could use a box of them.
