California Contempora

The California Contempora butter dish is relatively hard-to-find. The indented lid handles are a particularly striking mid-century style. Of all the Metlox freeform patterns, the California Mobile butter dish is truly rare. It is very likely that the Mobile butter dish was a custom order item only.
This cigarette box is one of the most intriguing mid-century modern shapes. It is pleasingly asymmetrical in both the horizontal and vertical planes. The lid is handleless and looks like it should slide off the box. The cigarette box shape echoes the shape of the handled covered casserole.
The divided vegetable dish has also been called by collectors the chip and dip dish. It is not surprising that this shape is wildly innovative and modern. Pictures can be deceiving. The size of this piece is consistent with an oversized double vegetable, much larger than the previous two pieces.

Re: California Contempora

I just picked up the divided vegetable on the cheap from an online auction site (ahem) - it's big, huge in fact.  Don't get me wrong, I love this piece. But it's huge. And I'm scratching my head trying to figure out a good, safe place to put it, cuz it ain't fittin' anywhere.

Did I mention it's awesome?
