Francis Joseph Von Tury, Potter-Ceramacist

Francis J. Von Tury was one of America's most highly respected ceramic engineers and craftsman-potters. His work included architectural ceramics that included tiles & murals. He also was involved in important reconstruction and restoration projects, one of the most notable being at the US Capitol building in Washington, DC. Von Tury is best known to collectors for his porcelain artware. He also designed pottery artware, garden pottery, smoker's giftwares, figures, vases, and lamp bases.

Von Tury was president of Vontury, Inc. which was located on Lehigh Street in Perth Amboy. China directories list this as the company's address into the early 1960s. Lehner reported that his company was still in business in the mid-1980s and that Von Tury also had studios in Metuchen and Edison, New Jersey. Von Tury was a prize winner at the 1939 National Ceramic Exhibition in Syracuse, New York. Subsequent to that, his work won numerous awards. Von Tury ceramics have been exhibited in many museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. Francis Joseph Von Tury (1901-1992) was born in Miskolc, Hungary. His professional education (1918-1926) included studies at the Gymnasium & Technical Institute, the University of Budapest, and the State Institute for Ceramic & Applied Art (Teplitz, Czech). Von Tury considered himself both a ceramic craftsman-potter & engineer. From 1926 to 1936, Von Tury worked as a technical advisor to the ceramic industry both in the United States and Europe. His early work included research into colored glazes for sanitary ware, research and technical direction in developing a one-fire process for vitreous china, tiles, and sanitary ware. His clients included Shanks & Co., Glasgow; Societe de Ceramique, France; Fords Porcelain Works, Perth Amboy, NJ; Royal Delft, Holland; Richard Ginori, Italy; Zsolnay, Hungary; and British Clay, England. By 1936, Von Tury had established his own cermic studio in Perth Amboy, N.J. During this time and well into the mid-century, Von Tury conducted research for improving the ceramic body, glaze, color, and design of high-fired porcelain artware. In 1942, Francis Von Tury was admitted to the American Ceramic Society and served as a member of its design division in 1950-51 and as Vice-Chairman of its Design Division in 1951-1952 and Chairman of the Design Division in 1954-1955. Two articles on Von Tury of interest to the mid-century ceramic art historian are Classifications in Clay, Craft Horizons, August 1948 and Vontury--Master Potter in Ceramic Industry, May 1950.
